Description of disabilities:

  • Lacking motivation

  • Attention deficits

  • Unexpected underachievement

  • Trouble processing information

  • Not able to generalize information

  • Poor problem solving skills/ strategies

  • Bad language and cognitive development

  • Disorganization

  • Immature social skills

  • Inactivity while in the learning process

  • Struggles with reading fluency and reading and listening comprehension

  • Problems organizing thoughts for writing

  • Difficulty expressing thoughts, emotions, or knowledge

  • Struggle with social skills ( 75% of students with learning disabilities  struggle socially)

  • Unable to generalize and can not transfer learning from one situation to another.

Some strategies that can be implemented to support the student in the classroom, including partnerships with families and communities:

  • Data based practices ( cooperative Learning, Peer Tutoring, Technology)
  • Cooperative learning: Guided Small group work/ projects

  • Peer Tutoring: Would combine peer tutoring with cooperative learning with instruction.

  • Technology: Computerized language translators ( google translate for ex) , and technology can also be a tool to improve the curriculum and instructional accommodations that are in place.

  • Make sure that the student gets more assistance and attention to improve their situation.

  • To improve social skills in the classroom:Teacher’s can pair students together who share mutual interests , Combine students who have disabilities with students without disabilities , teach how important self control is, provide feedback, peer tutoring, and also have the student practice an important social skill.

  • Have a conversation with parents about home environments… making sure the parents are being good role models to their kid, the student is given different opportunities to talk, and instructional and positive situations presented in the students home life. By doing this, it will help foster positive language development for the student who is struggling.

  • -An RTI/ assessment should be implemented for students who do not meet academic expectations. ( The teacher can choose which level they feel is appropriate for the student to be in… whether that be Tier 1,2, or 3)                                                                  -Then a classroom assessment measures should be used on a frequent basis. Assessment on a specific skill that the student is learning until mastery is achieved. ( This is called mastery measurement )... There is also a curriculum-based measurement that measures a students progress right from curriculum and uses all of the skills for the instructional year.

^Both methods are used during the evaluation process to monitor the students progress.

  • The parents and teachers should have a very well written and organized plan for the long run that can help students be successful in the classroom from the time their struggles begin to the time that they are supposed to leave for college. Students will definitely require accommodations to succeed but with the right plan of action it is very possible for a disabled student to succeed in a post secondary education.
