Responsive Teaching Strategies for Linguistically and Culturally diverse students with disabilities

🌎💛🌍💛🌍

Description of disability:

When the impairment of a culturally or linguistically diverse student occurs in both English and the child’s dominant language.

Generally, there 3 groups of  students that are considered to be “diverse”

  • There are Linguistically diverse students

  • There are Culturally diverse students

  • Then there are students who are both Linguistically and Culturally diverse with disabilities

Fun fact:

Diversity doesn’t cause disabilities and poverty makes students at a high risk for disabilities. Not all linguistically/culturally diverse students are poor, but they are proportionally more likely to be poor though… Also, mobility is a factor since students have a fractured education and it can result in a high absenteeism and it also makes the risk for health care issues go up.

List of Strategies that can be implemented to support students with disabilities in order to provide them with opportunities to soar in the classroom  (including partnerships with families and communities) :

-Database practices such as Cooperative Learning, peer tutoring, and technology

-More attention and assistance for these students

-instructional accommodations for students who are imperative for students who are not as competent in the use of the English language as their peers.

-School employees with different areas of expertise that are working together for students …partnerships should be formed such as bilingual professionals and interpreters to help these students with their struggles.

-Partnership with families and communities should be formed as well. There needs to be an environment with trust and respect, families need to be included as partners in the child's education, information should be provided often and early on pertaining to future educational plans such as SAT preparation, or general graduation requirements. Also, jargon shouldn’t be used to communicate with parents and families of the students because they could get confused with some of the terms being explained to them. They should be getting simplified and easy to understand explanations of what exactly the issue at hand is.

Ways that  teachers can diverse students with disabilities by becoming culturally sensitive and aware about second language acquisition, providing culturally responsive instructions, providing content that reflects the central aspects of cultures, and using motivating instructional materials to help guide the students.
